DEXIA ONTKENT VETREK UIT NEDERLAND NIET
quote
Dexia highlighted the ups-and-downs of investment banking on Thursday when the Franco-Belgian bank said it was in talks over a management buy-out of Kempen, its Dutch merchant bank.
The deal, which is estimated to be worth one-fifth of the €1bn that Dexia paid for Kempen three years ago, also underlines its bungled foray in the Netherlands.
It has been embroiled in a bitter legal battle there with investors who lost money in a share leasing fund managed by Labouchere, another Dutch bank acquired by Dexia in 2000.
DEXIA onkent dat afstoten van Kempen een signaal voor volledig terugtrekken uit Nederland NIET.
Dexia refused to confirm that the divestment of Kempen could signal a full retreat from the Dutch market on Thursday, except to say that "our aim is no longer to have problems in the Netherlands".
Dexia would not comment on the value of Kempen, which is expected to return to profit this year, but analysts estimated a price tag of about €200m.
